The Dallas Cowboys have signed former 49ers and Raiders edge rusher Aldon Smith; the deal is for one-year worth up to $4 million. Smith’s contract will start when he is officially reinstated.

Smith last played in 2015 with the Raiders before being suspended on November 17th, 2015, after abusing the league substance abuse policy and numerous brushes with the law. Smith was released by the Raiders in 2018 after being named as a suspect in domestic violence incident.

In Smith’s last season with the Raiders, he posted 3.5 sacks in seven starts with the team. When Smith was with the 49ers, he was a dominant player. In 2012, he was an all-pro player and had 19.5 sacks in that same season, in four seasons with the 49ers, Smith totaled 44 sacks. For his career, he has 47.5 total sacks.

It will be interesting to see what Smith will bring to Cowboys after a very long lay off. Smith was an outstanding pass rusher; maybe some of those traits are still there, and he can be a productive pass rusher for the Cowboys.
